sporting wales issue ten Cover story - jamie roberts
Many football commentators were shocked when Wales captain Ashley Williams was booed by his own fans at the Cardiff City Stadium in a 3-0 win, but an earlier meeting in the team hotel held the biggest surprise for the Swansea defender.
For that meeting on the second morning of Wales’s preparation to face Scotland was when manager John Toshack offered the captain’s armband to Williams. “I am still shocked to this day,” admitted the likeable Swan.
It resulted in a surreal reaction from fans in Cardiff as Welsh captain Williams – and Swansea teammate Joe Allen - were booed, while Scotland striker Ross McCormack, a Bluebirds player, was cheered.
